Melatonin is produced in the pineal gland which is outside of the blood–brain barrier. It acts as an hormone�and is released into the blood. Melatonin acts on melatonin receptors. Melatonin S.R. tablets (2 mg) means Melatonin Slow Release or Sustained Release tablets (2 mg) and corresponds to Melatonin P.R., i.e. Prolonged Release, tablets, as well as to Melatonin E.R. or X.R., i.e. Extended Release, tablets, and to Melatonin M.R., i.e. Modified Release, tablets (2 mg) .
